The Buunabet Beat

The Buunabet beat is our way of highlighting new and cool technology, what's going on in the Portland technical scene, and offering some technical tips and tricks that we find help us in our daily computing.

What exactly is a "buunabet?" "Bunna" (or "buuna" as we like to spell it) means coffee in the Amharic language; "bet" is house. So Buunabet = Coffee House. Why name a technology consulting company "coffee house" albeit in a foreign language?

When traveling in Ethiopia, one of the cultural rituals that meant the most to Jennifer was the Ethiopian coffee ceremony. During coffee ceremony in businesses, homes, and even huts, cohorts, family and friends gather to talk and exchange news. Green coffee beans are roasted over a small charcoal burner. As the coffee beans roast, a plate of popped corn or toasted wheat is shared amongst the circle. When finished, the plate of roasted coffee beans is waved under each person's nose in turn, and then ground and poured into a coffee pot. Boiling water is poured over the beans and the coffee is served in cups with either salt or sugar, depending on the region. As a traveler in Ethiopia, to be invited to a coffee ceremony is a great honor.

Here at the Buunabet group, we believe that technology should facilitate the sharing and discussion of news, events, and knowledge rather then merely digitizing bureaucratic communication methods -- sort of like an Ethiopian coffee ceremony.

Technical Tips and Tricks
